About the French School of Riga
The French School of Riga is a private, non-profit school managed by the association of students’ parents, APECEF (Association des Parents d’Elèves des Classes d'Enseignement en Français). By enrolling your child in the school, you become a de facto member of this association.
The APECEF Board of Directors meets regularly to ensure the school’s administrative, financial and promotional success. It ensures the school complies with the same pedagogical principles that apply to French public educational institutions, while also meeting the requirements of the Latvian educational system. The Board also organizes a School Council at least three times per year (once per trimester).
The Members of the Board of Directors are elected each year from among the parents of the students and the parents do their work in the board as volunteers. The 2009-2010 Members of the Board of Directors are:
Mrs. Laura Gatavs, President
Mrs. Doreen Maroney, Secretary
Mrs. Andra Damberga, Public Relations Consultant
Vacancy : Treasurer

The School Council votes on the school’s rules, Mission Statement, and questions of time-management during the school-year. Above all, the School Council is concerned with the administrative functioning of the school, including extracurricular activities/clubs (cultural, athletic, educational, etc.), nutrition and meals, pedagogical issues, and the acquisition and use of school supplies and teaching materials. The Council is composed of the Board of Directors, the School’s Headmaster, elected Parent Representatives, and honorary members from the French Embassy in Latvia: the French Ambassador, the Counselor for Cooperation and Cultural Action, and the Cooperation Attaché.
Parent Representatives are elected every year in October, one parent for each class in the school. They are members of the School Council, and regularly report the needs, suggestions and concerns of the parents of the student body. When necessary, the Representatives act as mediators between parents and educators.
Who is eligible to run for an elected position?
To serve on the Board of Directors or the School Council, you must have a child enrolled in the French School of Riga. Only one parent per household may run, regardless of the parents’ marital status or nationality. Legal guardians are also eligible to run for an elected position; only parents who no longer have parental rights or legal guardianship of their children are ineligible. Each household may vote only one time for each office on the Board and Council, no matter how many children per household are enrolled in the school.
